Energy manager using THORIUM software to simulate and optimize energy systems.
THORIUM®

Simulate and optimize energy systems

The software models complex energy systems, simulates scenarios, and optimizes design and operating strategies with regard to resilience, autarky, costs, and CO₂ emissions.

The energy system as a digital twin

THORIUM® digitally maps the energy supply with its components and dependencies. The system structure is adapted to the respective application.

The interaction of generation, storage, conversion, and consumption becomes visible. On this basis, different dimensioning and operating strategies can be simulated, evaluated, and optimized.

  • Generators

e.g., photovoltaics, wind power, grid, generator

  • Storage

    e.g., battery storage, thermal storage

  • Consumers

e.g., buildings, production facilities, data centers, charging infrastructure

THORIUM builds on the simulation and optimization platform LEC ENERsim. HDC is further developing this technological foundation for the requirements of resilient energy systems.

The core functions of THORIUM

  • System modeling

Digitally map complex energy architectures with their components and dependencies

  • Simulation & scenarios

Simulate operating conditions, load changes, failures, and changed availability

  • Design & dimensioning

Design components and capacities to match the requirements of the energy system

  • Multi-objective optimization

Evaluate and optimize system design and operating strategies economically, ecologically, and technically

  • Resilience analysis & priority supply

Prioritize critical consumers and examine which functions remain available even during outages

  • Real-time optimization

Adapt operating strategies and priorities to changing conditions during ongoing operations

  • KRITIS

Plan and optimize security of supply for critical infrastructures

  • Defense

Design energy supply for military installations as well as mobile and deployable applications

  • Industrial

Optimize security of supply and cost-effectiveness of energy-intensive processes

Your added value

Transparency

Recognize relationships, dependencies, and optimization potential

Basis for decisions

Compare variants, assess impacts in advance, and document decisions in a traceable manner

Ability to act

Align energy supply with critical functions and changing environmental and threat situations

Supply by priority

Not every function of a site is equally critical. THORIUM® enables you to prioritize consumers and map different requirements for their supply.

  • Critical functions

Must remain available at all times.
Example: intensive care unit in a hospital

  • Important operational functions

Must remain available for a defined period.
Example: cold chain in a hospital

  • Lower-priority consumers

Can be reduced or temporarily not supplied when availability is limited.
    Example: cafeteria in a hospital

Multi-objective optimization

THORIUM also considers individually defined target variables individually or jointly when designing and optimizing operating strategies.
